The EU Recycled 42.4% of Plastic Packaging in 2024. What That Number Means for rPET

Plastics News reports the EU hit a 42.4% recycling rate for plastic packaging in 2024. For a bottle buyer, the number is less important than the gap between the headline rate and the rPET actually available.

What Changed

Plastics News reports that the EU recycled 42.4 % of plastic packaging waste in 2024. The figure is progress, and it is also the number that will be quoted at every packaging meeting for the next year.

What It Means for Buyers

The gap that matters to buyers is between collection and food-grade recycled material. Bottles collected curbside do not automatically become bottle-grade rPET: they have to be sorted, washed and, for food contact, run through a process that is authorised for food use. That step is where supply is tight and where the price premium lives.

In practice, three things follow. First, rPET is not a commodity price: food-grade pellet can trade well above virgin PET, and the spread moves with collection rates rather than oil. Second, recycled content is a percentage on a declaration, not a marketing line, so a supplier should be able to name the grade and the percentage behind it. Third, colour matters: higher recycled content shifts clear PET slightly warmer, which is fine for amber or green packs and awkward for water-clear ones.

What to Ask a Supplier

For a bottle spec, the questions are short. What percentage of recycled content, which grade, is the declaration per batch or per order, and does the food-contact documentation cover the recycled input. If a supplier answers all four, the recycled claim will survive an audit. If the answer is “eco bottle”, it will not.

The 42.4 % figure will rise slowly. The supply of food-grade rPET will rise more slowly still, which is why brands that lock in a grade early tend to keep it.

What It Changes in a Bottle Spec

Collection Is Not Food-Grade Supply

The 42.4 % figure measures collection and recycling, not food-grade rPET availability. The sorting and authorisation step is the bottleneck, and the premium sits there.

Four Questions on Recycled Content

Percentage, grade, whether the declaration is per batch, and whether the food-contact file covers the recycled input. If a supplier cannot answer all four, the claim will not survive an audit.
