Bottle Decoration: Silkscreen, Hot Stamp, Spray Coat — and What Each Does to MOQ
Decoration is where a commodity bottle becomes a brand — and where the minimum order quietly triples. Four processes, what each costs in MOQ and lead time, and how to choose between them.
The bottle is the same; the decoration is the difference between a 40-cent pack and a 90-cent pack at retail. It is also the step where buyers discover that four-colour print has a different minimum from one-colour.
Here is what each process actually requires, in numbers.

Silkscreen: the Workhorse
One to four colours, applied directly to the bottle. It is the lowest unit cost way to put a logo on a pack and the most forgiving on small runs — 1,000 pcs, five extra days.
Limitation: it prints on curved surfaces in straight lines. Complex gradients and photographs are not silkscreen work; those go to labels or sleeves.
Hot Stamp and Spray Coat: the Premium Two
Hot stamping presses foil into the surface for a metallic logo. Spray coating covers the whole bottle in matte, gloss or soft-touch. Both need 3,000 pcs because both are set-up-heavy: plates, masking, oven time.
Soft-touch is the finish that most often sells a premium line, and the one that shows fingerprints. Say so to your customer before they approve it.
Labels Are Not a Downgrade
A pressure-sensitive label on a clear bottle can carry full-colour artwork and variable data that silkscreen cannot, at 1,000 pcs and three extra days. For short runs and market tests, it is usually the right first move — then switch to print once the design stops changing.
Artwork: What We Need to Quote
Vector artwork (AI or PDF) with the print area marked, the Pantone references, and the bottle drawing. Without the print area, every supplier quotes a different price for a different amount of ink.
Choosing Decoration by Volume
Decoration is where a stock bottle becomes a brand, and where MOQ jumps. The decision is volume first.
Under 1,000 pcs
Digital label or a stock-colour bottle with a printed label. Silkscreen plates are not economic; spray coat is not available.
1,000–3,000 pcs
Silkscreen in one to four colours. This is the sweet spot: a plate is a one-off, and four colours still print in one pass.
Above 3,000 pcs
Spray coat, hot stamp, metallising. Each adds 5-10 days and a set-up cost, and each reads as premium on shelf.
What Decoration Does to Recycling
A full-body sleeve makes a PET bottle unrecyclable in practice; a paper label with wash-off adhesive keeps it in the stream. If the brand makes a recyclability claim, the decoration is part of the claim.
Questions We Get on This
What is the lowest unit cost way to brand a bottle?
One-colour silkscreen at 1,000 pcs. It is also the fastest, adding about five days to production.
Can I mix decoration methods on one order?
Yes, but each method has its own MOQ and its own set-up. A 1,000 pc silkscreen plus 3,000 pc hot stamp means the hot stamp runs at 3,000.
Do you print on the cap as well?
Yes — silkscreen or hot stamp on caps, quoted separately from the bottle.
Can you match a Pantone colour exactly?
We match to the Pantone reference on the bottle material, which shifts slightly on coloured resin. A physical sample is the only reliable approval.
What is the cheapest decoration?
A label on a stock-colour bottle below 1,000 pcs; silkscreen above 1,000.
How many colours can be silkscreened?
Up to four in one pass, more with multiple passes at added cost and time.
Does spray coat change the MOQ?
Yes — spray coat and metallising start at 3,000 pcs.
