Serum Bottles: 30 ml, Dropper or Airless — and What the Formula Decides

A serum is the most expensive thing most brands put in a bottle, and the smallest. At 30 ml the pack decision is almost entirely about how much air the formula meets.

Serums, oils and actives ship in 30 ml almost by convention. The choice that matters is the dispenser: a dropper, a standard pump, or an airless pack with a piston.

This page covers what changes between the three, what it costs, and which formulas actually need the expensive option.

Dropper: the Default, and Its Cost

A dropper is low-cost, familiar and precise enough for most oils. It is also the least protective: every time the pipette leaves the bottle, the product meets air, and the last 15–20 % of the fill is hard to draw up.

For a stable oil blend in amber PET, a dropper is the right answer. For vitamin C, retinol or anything with a short shelf life after opening, it is the wrong one.

Airless: Protection, at a Price

An airless pack has no dip tube: a piston follows the product down, so the formula only meets air at the nozzle. Dispensing is above 95 % of the fill, and the dose is consistent from the first pump to the last.

It costs 30–50 % more per unit than a dropper bottle at 30 ml, and the pack cannot be refilled. For a premium serum with an unstable active, that is usually still the lowest unit cost way to protect a expensive formula.

Glass or Plastic

Glass reads premium and is inert, which matters for essential oils and solvents. It is heavier, breaks, and costs more to ship. PET reads clean and modern and weighs a third as much.

The dropper itself can be glass in a plastic bottle, which is the usual compromise: the pipette gives the premium feel, the bottle keeps the freight down.

What to Send With the Brief

Fill volume, viscosity, whether the formula contains a solvent or a strong fragrance, and the dose per use. Viscosity decides whether a dropper can draw the product at all; the solvent decides whether PET is safe over twelve months.

Where Serum Bottles Fail

At 30 ml the pack is mostly a dispensing decision. Three failures.

Air Meets the Formula

A dropper lets air in every time it leaves the bottle. For vitamin C and retinol that is the difference between six months and six weeks.

Pipette Marks the Fill Level

A glass pipette inserted and removed leaves product on the inside wall, so the bottle looks emptier than it is. Airless avoids it.

Dropper Collar Mismatch

An 18/410 collar on an 18/415 neck leaks. Confirm the thread code, not the diameter.

Glass or Plastic, in Practice

Glass is inert and reads premium; it is also heavier and breaks. PET is a third of the weight and cheaper to ship. The usual compromise is a glass pipette in a plastic bottle.

Questions We Get on This

Is 30 ml the standard serum size?

Yes for face serum; 15 ml for trial and travel, 50 ml for body serum.

Can a dropper bottle be used for retinol?

Not ideal. Retinol oxidises; an airless pack protects it better.

What does airless cost compared with a dropper?

Roughly 30–50 % more per unit at 30 ml, including the pump.

Do you supply the dropper with the bottle?

Yes, 18/410 glass or plastic droppers, fitted and tested before packing.

Can a dropper be used for retinol?

It works but retinol oxidises; airless protects it better.

What does airless cost?

Roughly 30–50 % more per unit at 30 ml, including the pump.

Do you supply the dropper?

Yes, 18/410 glass or plastic, and push-button droppers.
