Hand Soap Bottles: Why 250 ml Is the Most Repeat-Ordered Size

Hand soap is the one bottle a household buys again without thinking. That makes it the most repeat-ordered SKU in the category — and the one where a pump that fails after 200 strokes costs you the account.

Hand soap and hand wash sell in 250, 300 and 500 ml, in clear PET or opaque HDPE, with a lotion pump or a foaming pump. The bottle is commodity; the pump is where returns come from.

This page covers the sizes we mould, the difference between a lotion pump and a foaming pump, and what to specify so the third refill still works.

Lotion Pump vs Foaming Pump

A lotion pump pushes product up the dip tube and out through a nozzle. A foaming pump mixes air with liquid at the nozzle and needs a low-viscosity formula plus a foaming agent — you cannot put a thick gel in a foamer.

The necks are the same 24/410 or 28/410, so the bottle does not change; the pump does. That is why the same 250 ml mould serves both product types.

250 ml Is a Repeat Purchase, Not a Premium One

A 250 ml hand soap is bought every six to eight weeks by the same household. The pack has to look consistent on shelf over years, which makes colour matching more important than novelty.

For private label, the same bottle runs in white, cream and clear for different retailers — three colours, one mould, 1,000 pcs each.

What Makes a Pump Fail

In practice, three things: a dip tube that does not reach the bottom (product left behind), a spring that corrodes with a high-salt formula, and a neck thread that is not tight enough to hold the pump under repeated strokes.

We test the pump on the bottle, filled, for a cycle count agreed with the closure supplier before the order ships. If your formula is high-salt or high-alcohol, say so — the spring material changes.

Labels in a Wet Bathroom

Hand soap lives next to a tap. Paper labels wrinkle and permanent adhesive lifts at the edges after a few weeks of steam. Specify a synthetic label with a waterproof adhesive, or print directly on the bottle.

Silkscreen is the lowest unit cost durable option at 1,000 pcs; it also avoids the label edge that collects water.

Where Hand Soap Bottles Fail

Hand soap is replaced every few weeks, so the pack has to survive dozens of refills. Three failures.

Pump Corrodes With a High-Salt Formula

Sanitiser and salt-based soaps attack the spring. Specify the spring material with the formula, not after the first complaint.

Thread Loosens Over Refills

A pump re-screwed 20 times wears the thread. A slightly deeper thread on the neck costs nothing at mould stage.

Label Edge Collects Residue

Soap residue builds on the label edge. Silkscreen has no edge; a synthetic label with rounded corners reduces it.

250 ml vs 500 ml for Commercial Buyers

250 ml is the household size; 500 ml is the washroom and HoReCa size. The 500 ml must take a lockable pump for refill carts, which is a closure decision rather than a bottle one.

Questions We Get on This

What is the most common hand soap bottle size?

250 ml for consumer hand wash; 300–500 ml for refill and family formats. 500 ml is also the standard for commercial washrooms.

Can I use a foaming pump on any bottle?

Yes if the neck matches and the formula is thin enough. A foaming pump will not work with a thick gel — it needs a low-viscosity soap with a foaming agent.

Do you supply the pump with the bottle?

Yes — lotion and foaming pumps in 24/410 and 28/410, tested on the bottle before packing.

Is PET or HDPE better for hand soap?

PET if the colour of the soap matters on shelf; HDPE if the line is value-focused and opacity is acceptable. Both are fine with a 24/410 pump.

Lotion pump or foaming pump?

Lotion for gel soap, foaming for low-viscosity soap with a foaming agent. The neck is the same.

Does the pump come fitted?

Yes, and tested on the bottle before packing.

Can I refill the same bottle?

Yes — specify a pump with a durable thread and a silicone valve for repeated use.
