Dropper Bottles: 18/410, Glass vs Plastic, and Dose per Drop

A dropper bottle is a bottle, a collar and a pipette that have to seal at three points. The 18/410 neck is the standard for serums and oils — the rest is a choice between glass weight and plastic economics.

Serums, oils and tinctures are dosed by the drop, which makes the dropper the product experience rather than a closure. A pipette that drips two drops when the label says one is a complaint waiting to happen.

We supply 18/410 bottles in PET with glass or plastic droppers, and test the assembly as a unit.

Glass vs Plastic

Glass reads premium and is inert — the right choice for essential oils and anything with a solvent. It is also heavier, breaks, and costs more to ship.

PET reads clean and modern, weighs a third as much, and is the pragmatic choice for e-liquid, travel sizes and sample kits. The dropper itself can still be glass in a PET bottle.

Why the Collar Matters More Than the Bottle

The collar holds the pipette and seals against the neck. If it is loose, the product leaks into the cap; if it is over-tight, the pipette cracks. This is the part we test on every batch rather than sampling.

Dose per Drop Is a Specification, Not a Guess

Drop size depends on the bore of the pipette and the viscosity of the liquid. Water-like serums give about 0.05 ml per drop; oils give less. If your label says “3 drops”, test with the actual fill before printing the carton.

Where Dropper Bottles Go Wrong

Four failures, all visible on a filled sample within a week.

The Pipette Does Not Reach the Base

A tube 5 mm short leaves the last 3 ml unusable. It is a length decision made at assembly, not a mould decision, and it is the most common complaint.

Bulb Perishes

Rubber bulbs harden and crack after a few hundred uses, especially with essential oils. A push-button dropper costs 20-30 % more and removes the problem.

Glass Pipette in a Plastic Bottle

The compromise most brands use: glass for the premium feel, PET for the freight. Check the collar fit — an 18/410 collar on a 18/415 neck leaks.

Label Over the Neck

A label that wraps the shoulder interferes with the collar. Keep the label 8 mm below the neck.

Sizing a Serum Bottle

15 ml for trial, 30 ml for the standard serum, 50 ml for body serum and hair oil. The 30 ml is the volume that fits a four-to-six-week routine, which is why it dominates.

Questions We Get on This

Can you supply the dropper separately?

Yes — 18/410 droppers at 1,000 pcs MOQ, glass or plastic, whether or not you buy the bottle from us.

Is a 30 ml dropper bottle really 30 ml?

Nominal capacity is to the shoulder, not the brim. With the dropper inserted, usable fill is typically 25–28 ml — plan the label claim accordingly.

Do you offer child-resistant droppers?

Yes, in 18/410 for CBD and essential oil markets where the destination market requires it.

Push-button dropper: what it is and when it pays

['A push-button dropper replaces the rubber bulb with a button on top: press, the pipette fills, release, the dose stays. It costs roughly 20–30 % more than a bulb dropper but removes the two complaints that come with bulbs — inconsistent dose and the bulb perishing after a few hundred uses.', 'It suits actives sold on precision (retinol, peptides) and markets where the pack is handled by untrained staff. For a 30 ml serum at 1,000 pcs, the difference is usually a few cents per unit.']

Can the pipette be printed with a logo?

On the bulb or the collar, yes. Printing on the glass pipette itself is not practical at these volumes.

What is the standard serum bottle size?

30 ml. 15 ml for trial and travel, 50 ml for body and hair.

Can a dropper be used with retinol?

It works but retinol oxidises; airless protects it better.

Do you supply the dropper?

Yes — 18/410 glass or plastic droppers, and push-button droppers, tested before packing.
