How Do I Choose the Right Closure?
Start from the product: water-thin takes a flip-top or sprayer, lotion takes a pump, oil takes a dropper. The neck follows the closure, not the other way round.
The Order of Decisions
Viscosity first, then dose, then one-handed use, then the look. Doing it in the other order is how a 24/410 pump ends up on a 50 ml bottle that looks top-heavy.
The Compatibility Trap
410 and 415 thread the same diameter but not the same height: a 410 cap threads onto a 415 neck and weeps. Confirm the thread code on the drawing, not the photo.
The Closure Follows the Neck
24/410 takes a lotion pump, a disc-top or a flip-top; 28/410 takes a heavier pump; 20/410 takes a fine mist sprayer or a small pump; 18/410 is the dropper neck.
The mistake is choosing the closure first and discovering the neck afterwards — that is where 'the pump does not fit' comes from.
Dose and Feel
A pump is a dose device: 1.2 ml per stroke for a lotion, 2 ml for a body wash. The bottle has to deliver that dose to the last third of the fill, which is why the dip tube length and the base shape matter as much as the pump.
A disc-top is cheap and gives no dose control; a fine mist sprayer needs a low-viscosity liquid, not a gel.
What Breaks First
On a lotion pump it is the spring, when a high-salt formula corrodes it. On a sprayer it is the nozzle, when a viscous product clogs it. On a disc-top it is the hinge, after a few thousand openings.
All three are testable in a week with the real formula, and none are fixable after the container ships.
